History
Legend of The Three Crabs

In 1958, Earnest and Iris Marshall, encouraged by friends to build a place to partake in the delicious and plentiful seafood of the area, built The 3 Crabs on land purchased from the McAlmonds many years previously. Learn more about the McAlmonds history by clicking here.

The name chosen was selected by the brothers to acknowledge their partnership with Martha Loffler who helped establish the good food and drinks that have prevailed throughout the years.

Their main goal was to use local seafood, complimented by other products imported to the peninsula.

Earnest Marshall harvested crabs and clams off the beach owned by the brothers in front of the restaurant. Finding a need for local oysters, he imported the spat from Japan and started the Dungeness Oyster Farm in 1960.

Brother Iris shucked oysters, peeled prawns and cracked crabs. He also ordered and hauled the produce and beverages used at the restaurant.

Martha Loffler left her mark on the restaurant by developing a unique array of dressings and sauces. "Martha's Own" is still used on the world-renowned slaw still served only at The 3 Crabs. Martha sold her interest in the business to Ernie Marshall in 1971, but she remained an active presence at The 3 Crabs until the late 1970's.

In 1972 Norma Marshal became Crab #3, bringing with her an 18-year background in restaurant operations. Her original desserts and specialties have become popular features of our menu.

Today, The 3 Crabs is a Northwest institution with a reputation for local seafood and friendly hospitality. We harvest our crabs, oysters and clams locally to assure freshness and proper handling. Wild salmon and halibut from the cold waters of Alaska, and Wild Tiger prawns from the Gulf of Mexico are served to ensure consistency and the best quality seafood for our guests.

A visit to The 3 Crabs has become a tradition on the Olympic Peninsula. Whether you're a first-time guest or an old friend, we welcome you and urge you to relax and enjoy good seafood prepared with pride.
